Types of bins

We have two types of bins available to rent for University of Alberta events:

  • Rolling Cart
  • Round Container (landfill only)

Use our chart to decide what type of bins you need for your U of A event:

Important: Each bin comes with a label that lists acceptable materials. We provide bags for the landfill waste bins only. Additional bin charges may apply if your bin needs to be emptied during your event.

How many bins will you need?

If you are using reusable cups, plates and utensils, you will need one organics bin per 1,000 people.

If you are using recyclable beverage containers, plastic or paper cups, paper plates, or plastic utensils, you will need one organics bin and one recyclables bin per 500 people.

The number of bins can be highly dependent on the needs of your event. If you aren’t sure how many you need, reach out to zerowaste@ualberta.ca.

Planning a tidy of your office space and needing extra waste bins? Email zerowaste@ualberta.ca with details on your event and how many bins you need.

Order your outdoor bins

Place an order for your outdoor recycle, organics or landfill waste bins when you book your outdoor event site.

Please place your bin order at least two weeks in advance.

Set up your bins

  • Group your bins together
  • Keep the lids consistent (all open or all closed)
  • Use the following order (to be consistent with other Zero Waste stations across campus):

Mixed Paper
Brown or Yellow

Recyclables
Blue

Organics
Green

Landfill
Grey or Black

Large temporary bins

For events or clean-outs that require larger temporary outdoor bins, please contact the Zero Waste Program Coordinator for bin types, sizes and quotes.

Did You Know?

The Daily Grind (located in the Students’ Union Building) uses compostable, disposable coffee cups and lids that can be placed into the organics bin on campus.

Unfortunately, this is not the case for most disposable cups and their lids. Please dispose of your coffee cups in the landfill bin unless you are certain your cup is compostable.
