Human Rights at The University of Alberta
Human rights at the University of Alberta are shaped by international, national and provincial legislation, which has helped to define our Discrimination, Harassment and Duty to Accommodate Policy.
The purpose of this policy is to foster, promote, and protect a respectful community which acknowledges the dignity and equality of all its members and which supports a work, study, and living environment free from discrimination and harassment. This includes providing individuals with reasonable accommodations based on the protected grounds.
The Office of Safe Disclosure and Human Rights is mandated to create awareness of the various processes that are in place to resolve any human rights complaints raised by any staff, faculty members, students and post-doctoral fellows (PDFs). Our office delivers training workshops and educational awareness campaigns to ensure human rights principles are integrated into daily campus life. Our human rights education gives individuals on campus the necessary knowledge, skills and awareness to help prevent human rights violations, while fostering a culture of equity, inclusiveness, and respect and at the U of A.
Discrimination against individuals or groups, based on any of the protected grounds, is prohibited:
place of origin
gender, gender identity and gender expression
source of income
or any other groups as amended from time to time.
