Smoke or Fire

If you see fire or smoke

  • Pull nearest alarm - These can be found at fire exits.
  • Leave the building immediately through the nearest marked fire exit. Do NOT use elevators or pedways. Close doors behind you.
  • If you cannot evacuate, call 911.
  • Once outside the building, move to the muster point, if you know where it is, or to an adjacent building.
  • Call 911 and then Protective Services (780-492-5050) to report the location of the fire.
  • Do NOT re-enter the building until permitted to do so by emergency responders.
  • Notify emergency responders if a building occupant might still be inside.

If you are trapped by fire

  • Block smoke from entering the room by inserting towels, blankets or clothing under the door.
  • Get low and stay as far away from the fire as possible. Get to a window if you can.
  • Call 911 and provide your exact location. Signal from a window.

If you encounter smoke

  • Get low and crawl away from the smoke and in the direction of an exit.
  • Cover your mouth with a damp cloth to filter out smoke.

Be prepared in case of fire

  • Familiarize yourself with the evacuation route and closest designated muster/gathering point. You can find this information on the signs posted next to elevators and stairwells in university buildings.
  • Ensure your staff, students, and visitors know your evacuation procedures.
  • Take fire extinguisher training.
