Close Out + Renovate a Research Space

If you're planning to relocate your research space or leave the university, you must ensure your current space is properly cleaned up.

If you are planning to leave, consult the Laboratory Closeout Standard  to shut down your workplace properly. The guidelines will help you to:

  • transfer ownership of the laboratory or assist with reoccupancy.
  • ensure a safe workplace for the next laboratory occupants.
  • avoid unnecessary disposal and decontamination costs.
  • avoid potential fines.

If your laboratory will be closed temporarily for maintenance, repairs or renovations, hazardous materials will need to be properly stored and secured. Consult the Clearance to Work in Laboratories Procedure.

If you are relocating to a new space on campus, please contact hse.info@ualberta.ca for more information.

Remember: your department is responsible to dispose of or transfer all hazardous materials and to leave the laboratory tidy and free of contamination for the next occupants.
