About Us

The Office of the Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Information Services and Technology) leads the development, evolution, and implementation of a long-range information and communications technology and security plan for the university.

Our key duties include:

  • ensuring the effectiveness of IT systems and services on campus;
  • protecting the university's computing and information assets while complying with applicable regulations, laws, and policies;
  • understanding and articulating the key IT issues facing the university; and,
  • participating in all major IT initiatives undertaken by the university.
  • administration of central enterprise systems.

We are committed to advancing teaching, learning, research, and administration with the latest technological developments.

Portfolio Overview

The Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Information Services and Technology) portfolio consists of two key units that create the information and communications technology framework of the university.

Information Services and Technology (IST)
Information Services and Technology (IST) is the central, on-campus support for technological services and solutions. Among other tasks, IST manages the university wireless network (UWS), CCIDs, USRI student ratings, and enterprise applications like Bear Tracks and PeopleSoft. Read IST's 2018 Annual Report.

Chief Information Security Officer (CISO)
The Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) oversees the university's efforts to protect its computing and information assets and to comply with applicable regulations, laws, and policies. The CISO provides guidance in areas like encryption, email and phishing, and mobile security.

IT Governance
IT Governance provides strategic leadership and establishes institution-wide IT priorities and policies in accordance with the University Strategic Plan. It defines the strategic, operational, and technical decision-making processes necessary to ensure innovative, efficient and effective use of information technology, at the enterprise level, within the University.

Projects & Initiatives

The Office of the Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Information Services and Technology) is committed to delivering IT solutions across the university. To that end, we are currently involved in the following initiatives:

Electronic Document and Records Management System (EDRMS)
The Electronic Document and Records Management System (EDRMS) is an open platform for business critical collaboration and document and record management for documents and related records.

Graduate Studies Management Solution (GSMS)
The VP-IST and the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research have created a collaborative program to automate the business processes concerning the graduate student life cycles within the University of Alberta.

Undergraduate Admissions Solution Implementation Project (UASI)
The Undergraduate Admissions Solution Implementation project (UASI) Project was undertaken to address the need for a more agile and sustainable admissions solution that will support the increasing number and complexity of applications, while providing an exceptional experience for students.
