Assessment Gap for Deaf Children - U of A Research Study Needs Your Help!

Dr. Lynn McQuarrie and the research team at the University of Alberta's Minerva Deaf Research Lab (MDRL) are conducting a pilot study to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly created American Sign Language (ASL) assessment tool for Deaf children between the ages of 4 to 7. Please click here for more information and how to get involved.

Other Research Opportunities

If you have taken part in our research and would like to take part in similar research in the future - or if you would like to volunteer for the first time, please email Most of our projects will require participants who are Deaf and who use American Sign Language (ASL).

Join the lab as a Volunteer

We welcome inquiries from those interested in the area of bilingual language development in deaf children, especially U of A students. There are often opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to volunteer in the lab. Students are asked to contribute between two and four hours per week to the lab, according to their schedules. Volunteers often go on to take up independent research projects, or research assistantships in the lab. We are also happy to offer letters of reference for our volunteers.

Please send a CV, student transcript (if appropriate), and a statement of your interest in the Lab to or drop them by the main office (Education North, room 5-156) if you are on campus.

Join the lab as a Graduate Student

We are always looking for bright, enthusiastic people to join our research group. We welcome applications from outstanding Master's and Doctoral students passionate about learning more about bilingual language and literacy development in deaf children.

Please consult the U of A Educational Psychology Department web page for instructions on how to apply, and do feel free to let Dr. Lynn McQuarrie know that you are interested in applying.

Our research would not be possible without your participation, so thank you for your consideration and time.
