The Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies celebrated its 20th anniversary in August 2018, a history marked with notable achievements, collaborations, stimulus, and ongoing inter-lateral relationships. The institution harbours a fascinating mix of academic disciplines, including Anthropology, Art & Design, Comparative Literature, Drama, Economics, English and Film Studies, History & Classics, International Relations, Modern Languages & Cultural Studies, Music, Peace & Post-Conflict Studies, Religious Studies, Women and Gender Studies, Psychology, and Media Studies to name only a sampling of the departments and programs in the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Arts which houses the institute. This variety allows for a diverse mix of programs. We invite all scholars and students interested in Central Europe to imagine ways the Wirth Institute can help with your ideas for conferences, publications, virtual seminars, exchanges, artistic projects, and more.

We gratefully acknowledge the ongoing support of the governments of Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Due to the generosity of Drs. Manfred and Alfred Wirth and many others, the fields of Central European, Habsburg, and Austrian studies are alive and well in Edmonton.

It is a true honour to be part of the institution as its Acting Director (Jan.-June 2019), while Dr. Joseph Patrouch is on a well-deserved sabbatical leave. While my own research focuses mostly on Theatre and Performance Studies, both critically as well as creatively, I encourage colleagues, scholars, and students of all disciplines to fully participate and exchange in ongoing research in the histories, cultures, and societies of Central Europe and connections well beyond geographic boundaries. The Wirth Institute stands ready to assist in this process in any way we can.

Please stop by at the Institute office, located in the Old Arts Building (2nd floor), or email me at defraeye@ualberta.ca.
