It is with profound sadness that I have to inform you that our friend and colleague, Dallas Cullen, died on January 10, 2010 after a short illness.

The Women's Studies programme owes a great deal to Dallas who never wavered in her attempts to see it instituted and to ensure that it was a success. She was a wonderful Chair of the programme, a supportive colleague and a treasured friend. We all have our special memories of Dallas, but the common thread I think would have to be her loyalty to her friends, her refusal to tolerate what she would call (in her diplomatic moments) fools, and her feminist commitment.

Dallas had a few years of great joy in her retirement in Comox among wonderful friends that she always referred to as her extended family. The extended family took great care of Dallas, especially in her last weeks, and all of them will miss her vibrant presence and steadfast friendship. Her beautiful calico cat, Lady, will also miss Dallas but she has been given a good home by Dallas's sister, Elizabeth.

We must celebrate Dallas's life and friendship and remember, as she and I agreed on our parting last week, "the good times", and there were certainly many of those for all of us to recall.

Rosalind Sydie.
