CHE 6XX: Biomaterials Engineering

This course is intended for graduate and advanced undergraduate students interested in biomaterials science. Students from the Faculties of Engineering, Medicine and Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences will be suitable to participate in this course. The first half of the course will concentrate on biomaterials currently used in medicine. The second half of the course will aim to familiarize the students with the current research activity in the field. Students will be evaluated based on an oral presentation, a term paper and midterm and final exams. Consent of the instructor is needed for registration.

Course Outline

  • Biomaterials: a survey of metalic and polymeric biomaterials (natural and synthetic) used for medical applications.

  • Techniques of Biomaterial Surface Modification and Characterization.

  • Biomaterial-Related Physiological Phenomena: biodegredation, protein adsorption, blood coagulation and cell-biomaterial binding.

  • Application of Biomaterials in Tissue Engineering: drug delivery, skin regeneration, bone tissue engineering and vascular vessel construction.

  • Biomolecules as Accessory Entities to Biomaterials.
