Track-tion
Track-tion is a sports event for persons with mental
disabilities. Competitors are matched with individuals called "counselors"
(somewhat similar to the camp counselor concept) who will spend the day
with them poviding support and friendship. Relationship building is a
key component of the counselor role. Some of the sporting activities are
open to the counselors as well, and everyone participates in the leisure
and social activities together.
Participants
Participants who have mental disabilities can be as young
as 6 years old and as old as 80 or more! No experience in track and field
competitions is required.
Event
The next event will be held in 2004 at the Butterdome indoor
track at the University of Alberta.
