Text of Johannes Brahms

The songs of Johannes Brahms are abundent and I have located a site which provides German text for his lieder and some english translations. I have also included an academic paper discussing popular folk song and its influence on Brahms' work. A list of links to his works will follow and these sites will give comprehensive listings to his lieder.

  1. The Lied and Song Texts Page
    Author: Emily Ezust
    URL:
    http://www.recmusic.org/lieder/#brahms

An alphabetical index of composers and their compositions of lied and song texts. The site is made up of the text of these compositions only. At the bottom of the page is a listing of language dictionaries, related lieder and song, and a small reference source.

The actual link to the text that Brahms employed in his lieder are, for the majority, presented in German. Some of the links are translated into English and are evident by the "E" next to the song cycles. The index itself gives the author of the text and the dates of the music composed and set to the text.

The "Miscellaneous Lieder" contains lieder in order of opus number and has a considerable amount of translated material. The presentation provides the original German wording and the translated English wording to the right. The source for the information pertaining to the poems is provided by A Guide to the Solo Songs of Johannes Brahms by Lucien Stark. Indiana University Press, Bloomington and Indianapolis. 1995

  2. The Spirit of Folk Song in the Lieder of Johannes Brahms
    Author: Sally Horgan
    URL:
    http://oberon.calstatela.edu/centers/Wagner/brahms.htm

A paper discussing the popularity of folksongs, their influence on Brahms' lieder compostions, and the subsequent popularity of his own compositions. Very informative paper with good analysis of the musical form.

  3. Lieder line by line: And word for word.
    Author: Phillips, L.
    Clarendon Press, Oxford 1996.
    Library of Congress : ML 54.6 P55 1996

A collection of Lieder compositions from a variety of composers; Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, and all translated into English from their original German text.
