Mission Statement

We, the members of Formula SAE at the University of Alberta, volunteer our time to design, build and manage a student vehicle project. Through the pursuit of our dreams and ambitions we strive to create a vehicle that can outperform the competition, while at the same time developing valuable life and career skills that will help us throughout our careers.

Project Info

Formula SAE at the University of Alberta is a student vehicle project in which students manage, design and build a race car that will compete in Fontana, California, where 80 other universities from around the world meet and share their knowledge of automotive engineering. We prepare a vehicle each year to go to competition, which involves a full year of design and a full year of manufacturing and testing. It challenges us not only in design, but also in project management: the fabrication of a professional vehicle with a limited budget.

This project provides an opportunity for students to put their knowledge of automotive engineering into practice. Students learn to work in a team environment and gain valuable experience in areas such as: suspension, engine and drive trains, thermodynamics, strength of materials, fluid dynamics, data acquisition, composites, testing, electronics, business and marketing, and project management.

The major components of the car are designed by senior engineering students for their capstone projects in both mechanical and electrical engineering. However, all students are encouraged to get involved with design as much as possible. Those who aren’t ready for design can become involved with fabrication, communication, logistics, administration, marketing, and many other areas of the project.
