Research Opportunities
Undergraduates
I routinely have several small research projects appropriate for
undergraduate students, typically involving the analysis of X-ray (or
optical, or infrared) data
on Unix/Linux type computers. Physics 499 projects are 3-credit courses
during a term, where the student gains experience with research and
presentation.
I also have some funding for paid summer research opportunities. To
apply for summer research spots, send or email me a letter stating
your interest, along with your current CV and (unofficial) recent transcript. Several of my undergraduates' research projects have resulted in papers published in refereed journals (Coomber+11,Stacey+11,Heinke+10). Please see or email me to discuss possible projects.
Graduate Students
I have openings available for graduate students, at either the master's or Ph.D. level (depending on acceptance to the U of Alberta, which I can't guarantee).
Please email me to discuss this possibility; identifying the possibility of working in a particular professor's group in one's research statement generally helps graduate school applications.
Postdoctoral Researchers
Occasionally the stellar astrophysics group may be able to fund
postdoctoral researchers; typically we advertise this on the AAS Job
Register. If interested, please contact myself or the other group
members: Prof. Natalia Ivanova, Prof. Sharon Morsink, or Prof. Gregory Sivakoff.
