Feminism(s) in the third Wave Conference, May 11-14, 2006
The University of Alberta Women’s Studies Undergraduate Association is pleased to present the Feminism(s) in the Third Wave conference. As student executives of the WSUA, it has become increasingly apparent that students are feeling a disconnect between feminist theory and feminist activism. Students have voiced concerns about how to connect what they learn in the classroom to the material realities of “women’s” lives. The range of feminist issues taken up by academia is increasing, but at the same time there has been a steady decrease in organized feminist activism, like the decline of organizations such as the National Action Committee on the Status of Women.
The main questions we face are: given the explosion of feminist topics in academia, how does feminist activism engage meaningfully with a multiplicity of voices, and can we still organize around “women”? Through panel discussions, workshops and social events, this conference will provide a forum for students to connect with each other and explore these questions. The WSUA created this conference because it is critical to address this disconnect on a national level.
The conference will be held from May 11 to May 14, 2006. There will be a series of panels, workshops and other activities that will address the disconnect between academia and activism.
