Dr. Li is Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry) and in Environmental Health Sciences (School of Public Health) at University of Alberta, Canada. She serves as the Vice-Chair for Environmental Chemistry Division of Canadian Society for Chemistry. She is a member of the Canadian Water Network National Center of Excellence (CWN-NCE); and she leads two international collaborative projects, supported by CWN-NCE and American Water Research Foundation, on the development of highly sensitive analytical and toxicological technologies for water research. Her diverse research deals with analytical technology development and detection of microbial pathogens, proteins, chemotherapeutics, and water contaminants, and has published in Analytical Chemistry, Angewandte Chemie, Environmental Science and Technology, and Journal of American Chemical Society.
Dr. Li is the recipient of the 2010 W.A.E. McBryde Medal, awarded by the Canadian Society for Chemistry. The McBryde Medal recognizes "a young scientist working in Canada who has made a significant achievement in pure or applied analytical chemistry". Dr. Li is a member of the Canadian Society for Chemistry, the Chemical Institute of Canada, the American Chemical Society, and the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. She has also received an NSERC University Faculty Award (2002-2007) and an NSERC Industrial Research Fellowship (1995/96 and 1996/97). She is guest professor at Zhejiang University, Southwest University, and Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing.
Dr. Li obtained undergraduate training at Hangzhou University (1979-1983) (now Zhejiang University). She obtained her M.Sc. in Environmental Chemistry from the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (1983-1986). After coming to Canada, Dr. Li obtained another M.Sc. degree. The second M.Sc. was in Analytical Chemistry from Brock University (1988-1989). Dr. Li received her Ph.D. in Environmental/Analytical Chemistry from the University of British Columbia (1990-1994). She did her NSERC Industrial postdoctoral research in bioanalytical chemistry under the supervision of Professor Norm Dovichi at the University of Alberta (1995-1999) with the support of MDS Sciex.
In the past, Dr. Li has worked as a scientist with PE Sciex and as Director of Analytical Department with Kinetana Group Inc. She was recruited as a faculty member to the Department of Public Health Sciences (July 2001) and Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (2005), University of Alberta. She was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure in December 2005 and to Full Professor in December 2010.
