Story Lines:
This weekend’s tournament marks the start of the fourth season of Canada West Rugby 7s
This will be the inaugural season for the Trinity Western Spartans in Rugby 7s. Calgary, Fraser Valley, Lethbridge, UBC Okanagan, UBC, and Victoria will also compete this weekend at Foote Field. 
The Alberta Pandas finished fifth in last year’s Rugby 7s season, going 7-10 across three tournaments. The Pandas went 3-2 in Edmonton last January, outscoring their opponents 157-61 in five matches.

48th Annual Golden Bears Open
Friday, January 19 (4:30 – 9:00 p.m.) & Saturday, January 20 (11:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)

Story Lines:
The Golden Bears and Pandas host the annual Golden Bears Open this weekend at the Pavilion, marking the second week of competition this season. 
The Bears placed 5th at the U SPORTS Championship last season, with both the Bears and Pandas earning a Canada West team bronze last year. 
The Golden Bears and Pandas will also host the 2020 U SPORTS Championship, March 5th to 7th.

Story Lines: 
With eight conference games remaining, the Bears hold a four-point lead on Calgary for first place in Canada West.
The Golden Bears are riding a 11-game win streak over the Lethbridge Pronghorns, which includes 10 conference games, and the 2019 University Cup quarter-final win. The last Lethbridge win came on February 4th, 2017 – a 4-3 2OT loss at home. 
After a six-point weekend, which included a first period hat-trick on Saturday, forward Cole Sanford now sits fifth in Canada West with 20 points in just 12 games. He now has 90 points in 80 career conference games.

Story Lines: 
Having now won six-straight conference games, the Pandas sit third in the conference with a 10-2 record, trailing the 12-0 Calgary Dinos and 12-0 Saskatchewan Huskies.
The Pandas are the third best defensive team in Canada West, allowing just 55.3 points against per game. MacEwan is the second-worst offensive team, averaging just 54.7 points scored per game.

The Bears and Pandas went a perfect 4-0 against MacEwan in conference play last season.
