After finishing fourth in Canada West last season with a 3-5 record, including earning a postseason berth, Golden Bears head coach Chris Morris and his staff have added to an already young core with another solid recruiting class.

Among the highlights of the 2018 recruiting class is running back Jonathan Rosery, quarterback Jonathan Ericson, lineman Rodeem Brown, and defensive end Donovan Burgmaier.

“This is one of the best classes we have had in my five years here as the head coach. We have some outstanding young talent coming in this spring.” said Morris. “Despite the obvious skill possessed by this draft class, its true strength might just be on the line of scrimmage. Over the next two years we will lose many players in the positional group to graduation including several All-Star and All-Canadian players. This class will constitute the next wave of linemen for the Golden Bears Football program.”

Arguably the two highlights of the lineman class are Brown and Tyler Duguid. Duguid, a Team Alberta football starter is also a Team Canada Rugby athlete, as well as a medal winning wrestler. Brown, meanwhile, is largely considered one of the best guard recruits in Canada, and along with Duiguid will join an already loaded offensive line which includes All-Canadians Mark Korte and Justin Lawrence.

Rosary is also joined by fellow running back CJFL All-Canadian Trey Campbell, who will both look to fill the void left by 2017 Hec Crighton Trophy winner Ed Ilnicki. On offence, receiver Adner St. Hilaire, and linemen Ryan Gibson and Seth Rogers offer even more talent at their respective positions.

On the defensive side of the ball, defensive backs Sean Bennett, Eli Klassen and Garrett Musgrave will add depth and talent to an improved group from 2017.

Burgmairer, a PFC All-Star and All-Canadian, is one of a handful of junior players joining the Golden Bears this offseason, including 2016 CJFL Player of the year Brad Launhardt (Quarterback), and former Calgary Colt defensive back Jordy Kibamba.

“As a whole this group of high school recruits will undoubtedly be one of the strongest in the nation and addresses the specific areas of need we had as a program.” continued Morris.

The Golden Bears will open the 2018 regular season on Friday, August 31st in Saskatoon with a meeting against the Saskatchewan Huskies.
