University of Alberta Golden Bears hockey alumni Derek Ryan has re-signed with the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, the club announced this week. The two sides agreed on a new one-year, one-way deal, that will pay Ryan $1.425 million for the 2017-18 season.

Ryan, 30, established NHL career highs in goals (11), assists (18) and points (29). The Spokane, WA, native led the Hurricanes in shooting percentage (14.1%, minimum 10 shots) and was tied for fourth on the team in power-play goals (4) and eighth in power-play points (8). Ryan was a finalist for the NHL's Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the player who best exemplifies qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to the game.

Originally signed by the Hurricanes as a free agent in June 2015, Ryan has totaled 13 goals and 18 assists (31 points) in 73 career games with Carolina. Prior to his time in the NHL, Ryan spent four seasons with the Golden Bears, tallying 58 goals and 146 points in 109 career Canada West conference games. He helped the Golden Bears to four-straight Canada West titles, and the 2008 CIS National Championship. After his time at the University of Alberta, Ryan spent three seasons in Austria, won the Most Valuable Player in the Swedish Hockey League in 2014-15, before spending two seasons with the Hurricanes AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.
