University of Alberta Golden Bears hockey alumnus Derek Ryan earned his second international medal with the American National team, as he and his teammates captured a bronze medal by defeating Team Canada 4-1 at the 2018 IIHF World Championships in Denmark.

Ryan becomes the fourth Golden Bear to win a medal for his country at the IIHF World Championships, joining Cory Cross (Canada), Don Stanley (Canada) and Bill Dimock (Canada). Ryan also previously helped Team USA to the gold medal at the 2013 Deutschland Cup in Germany.

Originally from Spokane, WA, Ryan joined the Golden Bears in 2007-08, helping the Bears to a University Cup championship in his rookie season. Over his four seasons with the Golden Bears, Ryan notched 58 goals and 146 points in 109 career Canada West conference games, and also helped the Golden Bears to four-straight Canada West titles.

Ryan, a pending unrestricted free agent in the NHL, is coming off a season in which he tallied career highs in goals (15), assists (23) and points (38) with the Carolina Hurricanes. In three seasons with Carolina, Ryan has recorded 28 goals and 69 points in 153 career games.
