The defending U SPORTS Champion University of Alberta Golden Bears hockey team will begin their 2018/19 season in Penticton, BC, as they will take part in the 2018 Young Stars Classic at the South Okanagan Events Centre, from Friday, September 7th to Sunday, September 9th.

Hosted by the Vancouver Canucks, the three-day hockey showcase will also feature the Winnipeg Jets rookies along with the UBC Thunderbirds. The Canucks and Jets top prospects will meet twice, alongside a two-game non-conference series between the Golden Bears and Thunderbirds.

The tournament, which has been held annually in Penticton since 2010, has featured rookies from other NHL clubs, including the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. 2018 will mark the first time that University teams have been featured in the tournament.

"We are very excited to partake in the Young Stars Classic in Penticton this upcoming fall. We had some very close games with UBC this past season, and playing a team of their caliber early in the season will be a good test." said Golden Bears general manager Stan Marple. "These games will help both our teams preparations for the forthcoming season, and it will be a good team building weekend for us. It is also  great opportunity to expose our players to the NHL Scouts of  both Winnipeg and Vancouver, and the fans in Penticton, who will get see first hand how fast and competitive U SPORTS hockey is."

The Golden Bears and Thunderbirds met four times during the 2017/18 Canada West season, with the Bears winning three of the four games. Alberta captured their record 54th conference championship and 16th University Cup Championship this past spring.
