Miske and Pawlenchuk join Bears in quest for repeat

Golden Bears add two former WHL captains to 2018/19 roster

The defending Canada West and U SPORTS Champion Alberta Golden Bears have added a pair of former Western Hockey League Captains to this year’s squad, as the team announced their newest recruiting class.

Former Prince Albert Raider Curtis Miske and Red Deer Rebel alum Grayson Pawlenchuk are the newest WHL graduates to join the Golden Bears, who are looking for a 55th conference title, and 17th University Cup championship.

“I’m excited about this year’s recruiting class. Both of our rookies have great character and leadership skills, which is an integral part of our program.” noted Ian Herbers, who is back coaching the Bears after three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers. “They will both be outstanding student-athletes for us for the next five seasons.”

The duo both captained their respective teams this past season, as Pawlenchuk capped off a 282-game WHL career with the Rebels by scoring a career best 52 points (18G-34A) in 72 games last season. He also skated at the 2016 MasterCard Memorial Cup with the Rebels.

Miske’s 151 points (64G-87A) over a 259-game WHL career saw him earn a contract with the ECHL's Orlando Solar Bears after he completed his playoff duties with the Prince Albert Raiders. The Beaumont, Alberta product also capped off his WHL career with 10 points in seven playoff games with the Raiders.

24 current members of the Golden Bears are WHL alumni. Last season 150 former WHLers skated for one of the eight CW men's hockey teams, including 49 in the CW Final.

The Golden Bears will open their 2018/19 conference season at home, as they host the Saskatchewan Huskies in a Canada West Final rematch, September 29th and 30th at Clare Drake Arena.
