EDMONTON - After two Golden Bears signed professional contracts last week, Alberta goalie Zach Sawchenko has followed suit with a pro deal of his own.
The second-year Bear and former Moose Jaw Warrior has signed a two-year American Hockey League deal with the San Jose Barracuda, the affiliate of the San Jose Sharks. His deal will start for the 2019/20 season.
Golden Bears Luke Philp (Calgary Flames) and Stephane Legault (South Carolina Stingrays) signed their pro deals earlier last week.
"I can't say I'm too surprised Zach was offered this opportunity with San Jose. He had an outstanding junior career with Moose Jaw, before joining us two years ago," said Bears GM Stan Marple. "He's been an Academic All-Canadian, a Canada West All-Star, and a champion with the Golden Bears. He is a tremendous person, athlete and student, and we wish him the best with an outstanding organization."
Across two seasons with the Golden Bears, Sawchenko established himself as one of the best goalies in Canada West. As a rookie, Sawchenko finished with a 12-2-0 conference record, with a 2.12 goals against average and 0.911 save percentage, leading the Golden Bears to their 54th Canada West Championship, and their 16th University Cup title.
This past season, Sawchenko was named a second-team conference all-star after leading the Bears with a 16-2-0 record, with a conference best 1.46 GAA, 0.926 SVP, and a new single-season record with five shutouts.
"Nobody with our program would be surprised to see him in the NHL sooner rather than later," continued Marple. "He has the talent and work ethic to reach the highest levels of professional hockey."
Across all competition, Sawchenko finished his short UofA career with a 45-9-0 record in 56 games.
