EDMONTON – The No.6 University of Alberta Golden Bears made quick work of their opponents on Saturday night at Saville Community Sports Centre, defeating the University of Winnipeg Wesmen in straight sets (25-14, 25-16, 25-17).

The Bears (6-2) were led by Jackson Kennedy’s efficient night. The third-year outside hitter had 14 kills on 20 attempts. Daniel Thiessen led the Wesmen (2-6) with 11 kills.

Much like Friday night, the home side jumped out to a quick start in the opening set, holding a 16-9 lead at the first set’s technical timeout. The Bears had a 93% sideout percentage en route to a 25-14 win.

Alberta continued their torrid offensive pace in the second set, jumping out to an early 9-3 advantage. The Bears continued to cruise, taking a 2-0 lead in the match thanks to a 25-16 victory in the set.

Winnipeg battled throughout the third set, but was unable to come back from another slow start, as the Bears wrapped up the match with a 25-17 win.

Overall, the Bears hitting percentage was an impressive .408, while they tallied 11 blocks, led by George Hobern’s hree solo blocks and three assists.

“We had a good week of practice and it showed on the court,” Kennedy explained. “We had some grind-it-out games on the road, especially in TRU (Thompson Rivers), and I think that helped our mentality heading into this weekend.”

The Wesmen will square off with their Winnipeg rivals, the University of Manitoba, next weekend. The first of the two matches will be played at The Duckworth Centre on Friday, November 22nd.

The Golden Bears hit the road next weekend for matches in Calgary against Mount Royal University, before returning home to face UBC on November 29th and 30th. You can catch all volleyball matches live and on-demand at canadawest.tv.
