University of Alberta Golden Bears wrestler Mike Asselstine picked up a silver medal for Canada at the 2014 Pan-American Wrestling Championships in Mexico City on July 17.

Asselstine, who hails from Edmonton, competed for the first place finish in the 61 kg weight class, but despite earning leads of 2-0 and 4-2 in his match against American Andrew Hochstrasser, he was suddenly pinned late in the match, and lost out on the gold medal.

He won a gold medal at the 2013 Francophone Games in Nice, France, the same year he claimed a gold medal at the CIS championships.

The 2013 U of A Wilson Challenge Trophy winner, as male athlete of the year, will next compete for Canada at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland (July 20-29) and then again in Uzbekistan between September 8-14 at the senior world wrestling championships.

He is entering his fourth season of eligibility as a Golden Bears wrestler at the U of A, and the Faculty of Education student is hoping to lead the Bears back to the top of the CIS podium as he did in 2013. The U of A wrestling program will host the CIS wrestling championships this February 27-28, 2015 and both the men’s and women’s programs will be contenders for the national championship banners.
