Returning to the mat after the winter semester break, the Golden Bears and Pandas wrestling teams will host the conference's best as the host the Golden Bears Invitational this weekend.
Along with GBI on Saturday afternoon, the Bears and Pandas will also welcome Calgary in their annual dual meet, with both events taking place in the University of Alberta's Main Gymnasium. The dual vs Calgary will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, with the Invitational starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
The Golden Bears and Pandas are each the defending Canada West Champions, and have began their 2018/19 seasons well. The Bears captured gold at the Dino Invitational and Huskie Open tournaments earlier this season, while the Pandas placed second and fourth, respectively.
This weekend will also mark the only home meets for the Bears and Pandas, with Fraser Valley hosting the Canada West Championship, and Calgary hosting the U SPORTS National Tournament.
Saturday's GBI will also be the final home event for two long-time Alberta wrestlers, fifth-year Panda Krystin Paquette, and fifth-year Bear Marcus Peterson. Paquette has earned three Canada West medals in four seasons, including a gold medal at the 2018 Conference Championship. Peterson is a two-time medal winner, also capturing the Male Athlete of the Year at the 2017 Canada West Championships.
