A powerful symbol of remembrance rose high at the University of Alberta today to recognize the service of Canada’s veterans and military members.
The official Poppy Flag of the Royal Canadian Legion was raised at the flag plaza in front of University Commons on the university’s North Campus.
“The Royal Canadian Legion has been a partner of the University of Alberta since 1952, providing vital support for veterans and military members who work and study at our university,” says U of A president and vice-chancellor Bill Flanagan. “We proudly raise this flag as a symbol of support for those who have served and those who continue to serve.”
Leading up to Remembrance Day, the Poppy Flag will fly at the university until Nov. 11.
The Royal Canadian Legion has played a vital role in supporting military and veteran initiatives at the university, including the Heroes in Mind, Advocacy and Research Consortium (HiMARC) and the Military and Veteran Friendly Campus program.
“The enduring connection with the University of Alberta is not only a source of pride for The Royal Canadian Legion, but an enduring legacy to our Veterans and their families,” says Tammy Wheeler, executive director of The Royal Canadian Legion, Alberta-NWT Command.
“As the Poppy Flag flies proudly over the University of Alberta, let it remind us all of the sons and daughters of Canada who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. May we carry them all close to our hearts.”
This year, the Legion's Poppy Campaign runs from Oct. 24 to Nov. 11. All proceeds go toward supporting Canada’s veterans and their families.
