Statement of Condolences

We are heartbroken to learn of the fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on Saturday, Oct. 17.

We are heartbroken to learn of the fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on Saturday, Oct. 17. On behalf of the University of Alberta community, we extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of those who lost their lives. Our thoughts are with everyone who was injured, and we hope for their full recovery.

This loss will be felt on our campuses. Many of our students and employees serve in the Canadian Armed Forces, balancing their studies and work with service to Canada. Many more are veterans who know what it means to serve alongside others, and to lose them. To each of you: we are thinking of you, and we are here to support you.

As a partner in the Canadian Military, Veteran and Family Connected Campus Consortium, the University of Alberta is committed to supporting those who serve, those who have served and their families.

We also recognize the military and civilian firefighters, first responders and health-care teams in Wainwright, Edmonton and across the province who continue to care for the injured and protect the surrounding community. Thank you for your skill and courage.

If this news has affected you, you are not alone. Reach out to a friend, a colleague or one of the supports on our campuses. We have supports for students and for faculty and staff.

To the members of the Canadian Armed Forces and their families: thank you for your service. The University of Alberta grieves with you.
