Serving on GFC committees is a great way to learn about the University of Alberta and can enhance your experience as a member of General Faculties Council (GFC). There are nine standing committees of GFC and student members ensure that student perspectives inform decision-making on hundreds of proposals every year.
Students Emily Holden and Phillip Vandevalk serve on the GFC Nominating Committee where they play an important role in bringing the perspective of students who study, teach and do research across the university:
Being a member of the General Faculties Council and Nominating Committee helped me better connect to the university. Having this experience helped me see the university in a whole new light and better understand how it operates. Being a part of GFC and its subcommittees can help bring real change in our university and make it a better place for all.”
-Phillip Vandevalk (Faculty of Education undergraduate student representative)
Being a GFC member has given me greater insight into the governance process at the University. I feel like I have a deeper understanding of how the University works and it has been rewarding to serve my University community in this way.”
-Emily Holden (Faculty of Science graduate student representative)
No experience serving on committees is necessary and students can choose to engage based on the time they have and the committee schedules. Serving is the best way to learn about governance.
