Fairness Day 2022: How does this impact me as a student?

Remonia, Graduate Ombudsperson, reflects on how Fairness Day can have a positive impact on students’ lives by connecting them with the right resources.

U of A students enter their studies with the hope of a wonderful university experience and with aspirations of successfully completing their programs. The journey from admission to convocation can be a challenging one. This can be exacerbated when students encounter processes or people that treat them unfairly.

Equitable fairness is having one’s individual circumstances considered in whatever processes they are going through or whatever decisions are being made. Every student has the right to fair processes and fair treatment. I am especially keen on helping students understand all aspects of fairness so they can identify when they are being treated unfairly, particularly to recognize if equitable fairness has been exercised.

As advocates for fairness, the Office of the Student Ombuds works with students to ensure that they are treated fairly and have the ability to engage in fair processes, that they understand the policies and procedures surrounding their case and that they understand their rights, especially the right to have their voice heard in the matter.

Join us for Fairness Day 2022 and explore what fairness means to you as a U of A student.

The Office of the Student Ombuds (OSO) is a team of six ombudspersons who advocate for fairness. To help promote a fuller understanding of fairness, the OSO will celebrate its 7th annual Fairness Day on November 2, 2022 with activities to help you learn about Fairness.

There will be fairness activities for staff and students at the Fairness Day Table, 12 p.m - 3:30 p.m. on North Campus Main Floor of SUB next to Food Court.
