Since completing her bachelor of arts at the U of A, Marlena (she/her)  is currently pursuing the after-degree education program. Originally from Vancouver, she has traded the coast for the prairies and now calls Edmonton home. When she’s not hitting the books, Marlena stays busy with volunteering, work and exploring the city’s food scene. To recharge, she enjoys reading, listening to music and watching movies. She's always up for discovering a new spot around the city, trying something new or finding the perfect place to grab her next coffee.

Finals season turns me into two things: exhausted and weirdly specific about snacks. Suddenly, food isn't just food — it’s motivation, emotional support and sometimes the only reason I agree to sit through a three-hour study block in Rutherford library.

When your brain is tired and your notes stop making sense, the right snack can genuinely make or break a study session. So in honour of that, here are my go-to study snacks, ranked by how much they’re absolutely carrying me through finals.

#1 Fruits and vegetables

One of the biggest advantages of fruits and vegetables is how they make me feel after eating them. There’s no crash, no heaviness … just steady energy that actually helps me focus. If I’m being honest, fruits and vegetables do a lot of the support work. Bananas are quick, filling and require zero prep, which is perfect when I’m running out the door or jumping into a study session. Fruits hit that perfect balance between healthy and satisfying. It feels like a treat without actually being one.

#2 Coffee (and tea)

These are unspoken heroes. Not snacks, but it would be wrong not to include them. Whether it’s early morning or late nights, coffee is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. It's not always the healthiest solution, which is why I like to bounce between a good cup of coffee and a mug of Earl Grey tea. During finals, this “snack” is a big part of my study routine.

#3 Banana and Greek yogurt bowl

This is my current obsession and go-to breakfast to start the day. It really carries me in a subtle way. It’s easy to throw together, has protein and actually keeps me full for longer than I expect. The natural sweetness from the banana makes it feel like a treat, even though it’s relatively healthy. More importantly, it doesn't lead to a crash. I can eat this and go straight into a productive study session without feeling like I need a nap 20 minutes later. It’s not flashy, but it’s effective, and honestly, that’s what matters most right now.

#4 Rice crackers

There's something about rice crackers that makes them ideal for studying. I can snack on them while reading, typing or watching lecture recordings without getting distracted. Unlike messier snacks, they don't require prep, utensils or even much attention. It’s just open the bag and go. One of the best things about rice crackers is how versatile they are. They’re solid on their own, but add a topping (e.g., peanut butter, hummus, cream cheese, etc.), and they instantly level up. This flexibility makes them perfect for finals, when your cravings change every few hours and you need options without putting in extra effort. Also, they are a healthier alternative to potato chips!

#5 Apple slices with peanut butter

This is one of the few snacks that actually makes me feel both energized and satisfied. The crispness of the apple wakes me up, while the peanut butter adds enough substance to keep me going. Also, it’s one of those snacks that feels intentional. Like, I didn’t just grab something randomly, I chose this. That small sense of control goes a long way during a time when everything else feels overwhelming.

#6 Baked oats

This is my mid-study reward snack. When I’ve been working for a while and need a break, making something warm and slightly indulgent feels like a reset button. There's something comforting about a warm snack during long study sessions, especially when everything else feels stressful. It’s sweet enough to feel like a treat but still filling enough to be justified as “fuel”. It reminds me to take a moment, breathe and then get back to it!

#7 Chicken, broccoli and rice meal prep

Not technically a snack, but this meal is what’s genuinely carrying my entire finals season. When I have meals prepped, I don’t have to think — I just eat and get back to studying. It’s simple, consistent and keeps me full for hours. More importantly, it removes decision fatigue. During finals, even small decisions feel exhausting, so having something reliable ready to go makes a huge difference. This isn't just food, it's structure. Right now, that's everything to me.

Finals season isn’t about having the perfect snack; it's about having something that works for you. Whether it’s carefully prepped meals or a handful of crackers at midnight, if it’s helping you stay focused and get through a workload, it’s doing its job.

At the end of the day, motivation comes and goes and sometimes the smallest things (like the right snack) can make a big difference.
