It’s hard to beat a good sandwich.
I love sandwiches, and luckily for me, there’s no shortage of places to grab a sandwich between classes, on a study break or after a long day on campus. Edmonton’s sandwich scene has something for everyone.
Here are some of my favourite sandwich spots in Edmonton, with several close to North Campus:
📍10542 Jasper Ave
📍9855 76 Avenue
📍8422 109 Street (Closest location to North Campus)
📍#6-10240 124 Street
(Vegetarian and vegan options available)
If I had to recommend one sandwich spot to someone who had never explored Edmonton’s sandwich scene, Farrow would probably be my first choice! With multiple locations around the city, including one within walking distance of North Campus, Farrow has developed a reputation for creative sandwiches.
Their menu offers monthly features, vegan options and … cronuts! My personal favourite thing about Farrow is that the sandwiches never feel boring. The combinations are inventive without losing the comforting quality that makes each sandwich very delicious!
My recommendation: Try the “Chef Beef” Sandwich with a cinnamon sugar cronut!
📍9330 Groat Rd NW
(Vegetarian options available)
For a sandwich with a view, Lift Me Up on the Lake is hard to beat. Located inside the main pavilion at William Hawrelak Park, this spot combines a meal with one of Edmonton’s nicest settings.
What makes Lift Me Up on the Lake stand out is the focaccia. The bread is soft, chewy and flavourful while holding its fillings without becoming overwhelming. Personally, this is the spot I would choose when I want the sandwich to be part of the experience, rather than simply a quick meal. Grab a sandwich, sit outside and enjoy the lake views.
My recommendation: Try the “Il Magnifico”!
📍9707 110 Street
(Vegetarian option available)
The Lunchbox Sandwich Shop brings a fun, nostalgic approach to the classic lunch idea. Located downtown, it specializes in deli-style sandwiches and even offers a lunchbox concept complete with a sandwich, drink and treats!
I love the idea behind this spot because it makes lunch feel a little more exciting. There’s something nostalgic about getting a sandwich accompanied by a little snack, and the generous portions make it a good option when you’re genuinely hungry. For people like me who get tired of the same quick lunch options, The Lunchbox is worth putting on the list.
My recommendation: Try “The Paul”!
📍10335 83 Avenue NW
(Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options available)
Pals has become one of Edmonton’s well-known sandwich destinations. Located on Whyte Avenue, Pals takes familiar deli favourites and gives them a modern twist. The menu includes everything from a Reuben and beef dip to a crispy chicken sandwich.
Pals is one of the places on this list where I would sit down and enjoy the meal rather than immediately heading back to campus. It has more of a restaurant atmosphere while still keeping the sandwich at the centre of the experience.
My recommendation: Try the “Beef Dip”!
📍10878 95 Street
📍17010 90 Avenue
📍5028 104a Street NW
The Italian Centre Shop is a classic Edmonton destination for a reason. While it's primarily a grocery store, its cafe area is also a fantastic place to pick up a sandwich. Their Italian subs are flavourful and packed with the kind of deli meats and cheeses you would expect from an Italian market.
For me, the biggest advantage is value. If I’m looking for a sandwich that’s going to keep me full for hours, the Italian Centre is one of my favourite choices. Also, it’s difficult to leave without buying something else from the bakery sections — so consider yourself warned!
My recommendation: Try the “Turkey Havarti Torpedo” paired with the soup of the day!
Edmonton’s sandwich scene proves a sandwich doesn't have to be boring.
There’s a sandwich for every kind of lunch! The best part about having so many options? You don’t have to pick just one. Edmonton’s a city worth eating your way through, one sandwich at a time.
