Student-tested advice for your first month at U of A

We asked the YouAlberta student blogger team for their top tips.

week of welcome

Don’t be afraid to ask for help or introduce yourself to others! Whether you’re unsure where a classroom is, have a question about an assignment or just want to meet people, remember that most of us are figuring things out too. Take advantage of the resources around you — you don’t have to navigate university on your own!

Make sure you account for self-care, even eating, in your schedule! It’s important to tend to yourself so you can actually function when it comes to academics and other “being a person” activities. Stress can suppress hunger cues, so if you’re struggling to feel hungry, having a schedule to fall back on to nourish yourself at set times is a great idea.

Get to know your campus layout, whether it's by looking at the online map on the U of A website, asking others or literally dedicating an hour to walking around. Knowing exactly where your future classes will be and mapping out your daily route from building to building will definitely ease a lot of nerves about your first few days (bonus points if you find good study spots)!

If you’re in a lab, talk to the person next to you. They’ll be a great resource for studying and maybe even your partner for group projects. By making friends now, you’ll have a support system in that class and will save yourself awkwardness later.

Take part in events like Week of Welcome as fully as possible. There’s something meaningful about being surrounded by students who are also stepping into an unfamiliar future, each carrying their own hopes, fears and ambitions. It reminds you that starting university is not only about earning a degree, but also about becoming someone new through the people you meet and the experiences you choose to embrace.

Keep your own food on you all day. Classes can be long and need your attention and engagement. Fresh food in your bag can be energizing, easy to access during busy times and time-saving.
