Since completing her bachelor of arts at the U of A, Marlena (she/her)  is currently pursuing the after-degree education program. Originally from Vancouver, she has traded the coast for the prairies and now calls Edmonton home. When she’s not hitting the books, Marlena stays busy with volunteering, work and exploring the city’s food scene. To recharge, she enjoys reading, listening to music and watching movies. She's always up for discovering a new spot around the city, trying something new or finding the perfect place to grab her next coffee.

This might surprise you, but there are plenty of options in Edmonton to satisfy your Mexican food cravings. Whether you’re looking for affordable Taco Tuesday deals, traditional flavours or just a dinner out with friends, there’s something for everyone!

One thing I love about Mexican cuisine is how many gluten-free and vegan options are available.

As someone who loves discovering new dishes and finding menu items worth coming back for, I’ve rounded up four Mexican restaurants that deserve a spot on your food bucket list.

El Mariachi Authentic Mexican Food

If you’re looking to spice up your Edmonton food adventures, add El Mariachi Authentic Mexican Food to your list! This restaurant brings a taste of Mexican culture with its vibrant atmosphere and menu of traditional Mexican flavours.

My favourite thing about this place is the wide variety of options, including their extensive taco flavours. I recommend visiting them for their Taco Tuesday special, where tacos are only $2 each!

If you have trouble deciding which taco flavours to order, consider sharing a bunch with friends so you can sample them. They also have many traditional Mexican specialties.

Something unique about El Mariachi is that they offer Mexican grocery products and snacks inside the restaurant, making it a fun stop for anyone looking for treats to enjoy at home.

The 3 Amigos

This family-run restaurant specializes in Oaxaca-style Mexican cuisine, bringing traditional flavours to south Edmonton. What I find particularly interesting about The 3 Amigos is its focus on handmade tortillas and fresh salsas. These details set its menu apart and let you explore the flavours of Oaxaca without leaving the city.

The birria quesadilla deserves a spot on your must-try list. Filled with cheese and slow-cooked beef, it's served with consommé for dipping, perfect for those who love rich and savoury flavours like me.

I also recommend their Taco Tuesday deal where you get four tacos served with a side of rice and beans for $19.99!

Luna Mexican Restaurant

enchiladas
Enchiladas at Luna

Luna brings Mexican flavours with a menu full of comforting dishes and a lively atmosphere, making it a great place to eat with friends and family.

The enchiladas suizas are my top recommendation for anyone who loves creamy, savoury flavours. Filled with chicken and covered in a tangy green salsa and topped with melted cheese and crema, it's the kind of dish that makes you savour every bite.

If green salsa’s not your thing, try the classic enchiladas! Their rich and delicious toppings create another great comfort food option.

Also check out their delicious tres leches cakes, which come in different flavours!

Julio’s Barrio

Fajitas at Julio's

What makes this spot stand out to me is more than just the food. Located on Whyte Avenue with colourful surroundings, a great patio area and a menu full of classics, it makes for a great experience out.

I highly recommend their fajitas! Served on a smoking-hot cast-iron skillet with sautéed onions, peppers and corn, they’re as fun to watch arrive at the table as they are to eat! You can choose between meat selections (vegetarian option available), but my go-to is always the Cajun chicken. If you love a meal that’s packed with flavour, these fajitas are a must-try!
