The University of Alberta Strongly Condemns Assault of Student at LRT Station

I’m deeply concerned by the assault of a student while using the LRT public transit system on Saturday night, April 24, 2021. Although preliminary accounts suggest that the attack was not racially motivated, we want to reaffirm our commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for our diverse university community.

We can report that the University of Alberta student involved is recovering, and U of A student services are supporting the student. The suspect has been arrested and I appreciate the work of the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) and hope that their investigation will provide clarity on the incident. U of A Protective Services continues to support EPS’ investigation of the public transit incident.

The safety and wellbeing of our students, faculty and staff is our top priority. I encourage any student affected by this incident to reach out to U of A student services (dosdean@ualberta.ca).

Background: Transit stations are the property of Edmonton Transit Service (ETS). Emergency phone / buttons at transit stations connect individuals with ETS security, who then activate the appropriate response. For incidents involving public transit close to U of A campuses, U of A Protective Services (UAPS) provides ETS/EPS support if or as needed. For the April 24, 2021 incident, UAPS were on site within minutes of being notified by EPS, who were already on scene with an ambulance. 

阿尔伯塔大学强烈谴责在LRT地铁站里发生的针对学生的袭击事件

 2021年4月24日星期六晚上，我校学生在乘坐地铁期间遭遇袭击。对此，我深感忧虑。尽管初步记录表明，本次袭击与种族歧视无关，我们仍希望在此强调，建设安全的校园环境，是我们对大学多元社区的一个重要承诺。

事件所涉及的阿尔伯塔大学学生，正在康复之中。大学的学生服务部门，也在提供相应的支持。目前，嫌疑人已被警方抓获。我们感谢埃德蒙顿市警局为此所做的工作，并希望他们的调查能使该事件水落石出。阿尔伯塔大学校园安保部门，也会继续支持埃德蒙顿警局对此次事件的调查。

学生和教职员工的安全，是我们工作的重中之重。对于因此次事件受到影响的同学们，我鼓励大家联系大学的学生服务部门： International Student Services。

校园地铁中转站是埃德蒙顿市公交公司的管辖区域。在紧急情况下，按下公交车站的紧急电话/按钮，先接到报警的是市公交公司的安全部门，并由他们来激活相应的出警反应。大学的安保部门会为埃德蒙顿市警局提供所需的支持。对于此次发生在4月24日晚上的事件，大学的安保部门在接到市警局通知后，几分钟之内即到达现场。市警局及救护车在此之前已经到达。
