This week, the University of Alberta is celebrating an IEEE distinguished award winner, a new member of the International Academy of Commercial and Consumer Law, recipients of Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Project Grants, and more! So, congrats to the following:

• Christian Beaulieu, Professor and Scientific Director, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - awarded a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Project Grant to advance work on MRI technology in understanding brain development and the diagnosis of strokes

• Mojgan Daneshmand, Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Radio Frequency Microsystems for Communication and Sensing, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering - won the prestigious IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) Lot Shafai Mid-Career Distinguished Achievement Award

• Shokrollah Elahi, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - received a foundation grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) for research related to immune system exhaustion associated with diseases like cancer and HIV

• Michael Hendzel, Professor, Department of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - received a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Project Grant to study the role of DNA-damage induced RNA

• Tom Hobman, Professor, Department of Cell Biology, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - won a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Project Grant to continue his work on the Zika virus

• Richard Lehner, Adjunct Professor, Division of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - received a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Project Grant for his work on cholesterol metabolism

• Patrick MacDonald, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - received a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Grant for his work on new treatments for diabetes

• Evangelos Michelakis, Professor, Division of Cardiology, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - received a foundation grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) for his work on malfunctioning mitochondria

• Neesh Pannu, Professor, Division of Nephrology, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - awarded a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Project Grant toward her work on chronic kidney disease

• Lynne Postovit, Co-director of the Cancer Research Institute of Northern Alberta (CRINA) and Associate Professor, Division of Experimental Oncology, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - received a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Project Grant to continue her work with improving outcomes for women with metastatic breast cancer

• Shannon Scott, Professor and Canada Research Chair for Knowledge Translation in Child Health, Faculty of Nursing - received a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Project Grant to improve tools for child health care by actively involving parents

• David Wishart, Professor, Departments of Biological Sciences and Computing Science, Faculty of Science - awarded a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Grant for his work on artificial intelligence techniques to predict those at risk of developing diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart disease

• Roderick J Wood, Professor, Faculty of Law - admitted as a member of the International Academy of Commercial and Consumer Law at the Academy's eighth biennial meeting in Fukuoka, Japan

• Golden Bears junior curling squad - won the inaugural Hokkaido Bank Curling Classic in Hokkaido, Japan
