Community Congrats! February 14, 2018

Celebrating our Building and Grounds Services crews, the Canada West wrestling champions, CIHR funding recipients, best paper awards and more!

We'd like to kick things off this time with a special shout out from Maryanne Doherty (Interim Chair & Professor, Department of Elementary Education) to our Building and Grounds Services crews:

"Sincere Appreciation to the crews who have done a fantastic job of clearing the ice and snow so that we can safely walk around campus! You must be working all night and all day."

Also this week, the University of Alberta is celebrating the Canada West wrestling champions, CIHR funding recipients, best paper awards and more! So, congratulations to the following:

  • Laurent Cammarata, Associate Professor, Campus Saint-Jean - received the Stephen A. Freeman Award for Best Published Article
  • Susan Colberg, Associate Professor, Department of Art and Design, Faculty of Arts - appointed to the jury of the Stiftung Buchkunst Stiftung Buchkunst international book design competition, one of the most prestigious book design competitions in the world
  • Eleni Stroulia, Professor, Department of Computing Science, Faculty of Science - named Instructor of the Month in the Faculty of Science
  • Richard Thompson, Associate Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering - awarded $608,000 through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) for medical imaging research exploring MRI imaging of pulmonary edema
  • Hasan Uludag, Associate Professor, Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, Faculty of Engineering - awarded $505,000 through CIHR for research he is leading into gene therapy
  • Larry Unsworth, Associate Professor, Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, Faculty of Engineering - awarded $218,000 through CIHR to develop platforms for treating perinatal brain injury in newborns
  • Jordan Wong, Golden Bears Wrestling - named Athlete of the Week
  • Chenjun Xiao, PhD Student, Department of Computing Science, Faculty of Science - received an outstanding paper award at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence 2018 conference
  • Golden Bears and Pandas Wrestling - won both the men's and women's Canada West Wrestling Championships
  • ReconciliActionYEG Blog - received the 2017 Canadian Law Blog Award for change and advocacy
