Today, the Government of Alberta tabled Budget 2022. This budget marks a turning point for the University of Alberta. While the government has continued its planned reductions to the post-secondary sector, it has also announced significant new investments in post-secondary education.
As part of the Alberta at Work Program, the government will invest $171 million over three years to increase enrolment and open seats for students in high demand programs. This new funding is an investment in Albertans and Alberta’s economic future–as well as an investment in the renewal and growth of the province’s vital post-secondary institutions. The U of A is in a strong position to take full advantage of the new funding program. We are experiencing record applications and we have both immediate and longer-term plans in place for expanding enrolment. We are ready to move quickly and expand programs where the demand is high, from both students and employers.
At the same time, we continue to face major financial challenges. The reduction to the university’s 2022-23 provincial grant announced today is significant–adding another $52 million to the cuts already experienced. However, we are prepared for this reduction and have been working to address it since the launch of U of A for Tomorrow in June 2020. While we still have more work to do, we have made huge progress over the past two years to make our operations more efficient and reduce our administrative costs. We will continue on this path and meet our target for a balanced budget in 2022-23.
Alberta’s population is young and growing at a faster rate than many other regions and provinces. A surge of post-secondary students are entering the system, with the number of high school graduates in Alberta projected to grow by up to 20% over the next six years. The U of A has the capacity to grow to meet the needs of future students and employers–and with our record of program excellence, we can attract a significant share of the new enrolment funding and expand our vital role in nurturing and preparing the talented, highly skilled workforce of Alberta’s future.

Aujourd’hui, le Gouvernement de l’Alberta a présenté son Budget 2022. Ce budget marque un tournant décisif pour l’Université de l’Alberta. Alors que le gouvernement maintient les réductions prévues pour le secteur du postsecondaire, il a également annoncé d’importants nouveaux investissements dans l’éducation postsecondaire.
Dans le cadre du programme « Alberta at Work », le gouvernement va investir 171 millions de dollars sur trois ans afin d’augmenter les inscriptions et le nombre de places disponibles pour les étudiants dans les programmes les plus demandés. Ce nouveau financement est un investissement en faveur des albertains et de l’avenir économique de l’Alberta, ainsi que du renouvellement et de la croissance des institutions postsecondaires essentielles de la province. La U of A est bien placée pour profiter de ce nouveau programme de financement. Nous faisons l’expérience d’un nombre record de candidatures et nous avons en place des plans, à la fois immédiats et sur le plus long terme, pour élargir nos effectifs. Nous sommes prêts à agir rapidement et à développer les programmes pour lesquels la demande est forte, à la fois de la part des étudiants et des employeurs.
En même temps, nous continuons de faire face à d’importants défis financiers. Les restrictions budgétaires provinciales annoncées aujourd’hui pour 2022-23 sont significatives, ajoutant 52 millions de dollars aux réductions déjà infligées. Cependant, nous sommes prêts à faire face à ces restrictions et travaillons à y répondre depuis le lancement de « U of A for Tomorrow » en juin 2020. Même s’il nous reste beaucoup de travail, nous avons fait de grands progrès au cours des deux dernières années afin de rendre nos opérations plus efficaces et de réduire nos frais administratifs. Nous allons continuer de suivre ce chemin pour atteindre notre objectif d’un budget équilibré en 2022-23.
La population de l’Alberta est jeune, et augmente plus rapidement que dans de nombreuses autres régions et provinces. Le système fait face à un afflux d’étudiants postsecondaires du fait de l’augmentation du nombre de diplômés du secondaire, qui pourrait atteindre jusqu’à 20 % au cours des six prochaines années. La U of A a la capacité de croître afin de répondre aux besoins des futurs étudiants et employeurs. Du fait de notre excellence en matière de programmes, nous pouvons attirer une part importante de ce nouveau financement relatif aux inscriptions, et élargir le rôle essentiel que nous jouons pour favoriser et former la main d’œuvre talentueuse, hautement compétente qui sera le futur de l’Alberta.
