Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) is a key institutional priority as we prepare for the University of Alberta for Tomorrow future. I have been proud of the work done to date to advance EDI, but am cognizant that there is much more we need to do. I am therefore pleased to announce that we will be increasing our capacity to advance our EDI activities at the leadership level through the creation of a Vice-Provost EDI, along with a refresh of our EDI Strategic Plan.

The Vice-Provost (EDI) will serve as a bold champion and strategic leader in realizing the university’s vision for EDI: to cultivate an institutional culture that values, supports and promotes equity, human rights, respect and accountability among faculty, staff and students. They will work collaboratively to integrate and coordinate EDI efforts institution-wide, and in turn, evolve the current EDI strategy to address gaps and leverage opportunities for growth. In conjunction with academic support units across the university’s academic mandate, and EDI leadership embedded in academic faculties, schools and colleges, they will advance equity, diversity, inclusivity, accessibility and human rights. We are currently accepting applications for this role.

EDI will remain a shared responsibility that we must all own. The U of A EDI Strategic Plan created in 2019 calls for deliberate action to embed EDI into every area and activity to make it a staple of our culture. The Vice-Provost (EDI) will lead the renewal of the EDI Strategic Plan to respond to community consultation and ensure we remain on track as the institution grows. It will also be fully integrated with other new and emerging institutional strategies, including the Indigenous Strategic Plan and forthcoming Strategic Research + Innovation Plan. Aligning these initiatives will increase collaboration and accelerate our collective progress.

This new role is one of multiple ways we are acting on our commitments to EDI at the U of A. It’s a priority as we pursue the UAT vision, and the new teams and structures reflect our dedication. Their principles and actions are underpinned by respect for the dignity, rights, and full participation of all those who live, work and learn within the university, including respect for reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. I would like to thank the members of our EDI units and institutional decision-makers for leading this work with integrity and respect, and ensuring the momentum continues. Making the U of A welcoming for anyone learning and researching with us enriches the environment for everyone.

Please join me in being an EDI advocate for our campuses, and considering what EDI looks like in your work or studies. I also invite you to share the Vice-Provost (EDI) posting with your networks, and look forward to meeting individuals interested in this important work. I will announce the successful candidate in the coming months.

With appreciation and gratitude,

Dr. Verna Yiu
Interim Provost and Vice-president (Academic)
