From the Provost’s Desk: Announcing the dean of Faculty of Nursing

Shannon Scott begins her five-year term as dean of the Faculty of Nursing on July 1.

Since January 2024, Shannon has been acting dean of the Faculty of Nursing, leveraging a strong leadership foundation that includes her role as acting vice-dean of the faculty from 2021-2023. Her leadership spans exceptional relationship-building, collaboration and visionary, strategic planning.

An accomplished teacher, researcher and mentor, Shannon has nearly 30 years as a registered nurse and more than 28 years of nursing education experience. She joined the U of A Faculty of Nursing in 2008 and held a Canada Research Chair in Knowledge Translations in Child Health from 2013-2023. Among her numerous awards and recognitions, she is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Nursing (2020), a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (2021) and a distinguished researcher with the Stollery Science Lab (2018). She has also been inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Research Hall of Fame.

She is a proud University of Alberta graduate, completing her PhD in nursing and a postdoctoral fellowship with the Department of Pediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. 

The Faculty of Nursing is recognized for its excellence. It is the top-rated nursing program in the country, according to Maclean’s 2024 Canadian University Rankings and was ranked as Canada’s best program in the 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject
