Students who have completed at least one year of university
study may enter the International Study Centre (ISC) through one of
the Upper-Year Program options offered in the spring and summer. The
Spring Term International Law Programs consist of three term-length
courses totally 1.5 credits. Each course is comprised of 36 contact
hours, including course-specific field studies. Classes are scheduled
Monday through Thursday, with Fridays, Saturdays and selected Sundays
reserved for field studies.
The ISC offers an intensive and integrated academic
program in international law. The program offers two modules, one in
International Business Law and the other in Public International Law.
Students may enroll in one of the two modules, and enrolment is limited
to no more than 25 students per module. Taking advantage of the castle's
location, the program includes a number of field trips to key international
institutions in Europe.
The first three weeks are spent in the classroom while
the forth week comprises of one-week frield trip to the continent,
including frield study trips to Paris, the Hague and Geneva. This is
followed by three weeks of classes at the ISC and a three day exam
period finishing at the end of June.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for Upper-Year study at the ISC, you must
be in good academic standing, meet your home university's
requirements for study abroad, and meet course prerequisites
or have equivalent qualifications. Students who are not Canadian
citizens or who have not been resident in an English-Speaking
country for a minimum of three consecutive years may be required
to submit a test of proficiency in English.
Program Costs
Spring Term International Law Program: $8,450 CND
Students should be aware of the numerous awards and bursaries available. These
need-based awards range in value between approximately $500 - $5000.

University of Alberta
Study Abroad Program (UASAP)
www.international.ualberta.ca
UASAPs allow University of Alberta students to
undertake part of their UofA studies abroad, or elsewhere in Canada
while earning credit towards their University of Alberta degree.
These programs operate during the summer, over a term or an academic
year and can provide affordable opportunities to study abroad.
Students who apply must meet the basic application
requirements and demonstrate personal suitability:
1. Good Academic Standing (2.7 Cumulative GPA, 3.0 Current GPA)
2. Personal suitability
3. Available Finances
4. Foreign Language Skills (where necessary)
5. Approval from your home faculty
6. Two letters of reference

Spring/Summer Study Law Abroad

Rome, Italy: June 3 - July 9, 2005
Study in Rome, Italy during the summer. Located on the Tiber River in the centre
of Rome, this program includes: observing a criminal trial, attending lectures
at the law school of the University of Sienna near Florence, attending classes
with Italian law students, and meeting Italian judges, law professors and
practicing attorneys. All instruction is in English
Tel Aviv, Israel: May 29 - July 8, 2005
Located in the heart of Tel Aviv, overlooking the Mediterranean
Sea, this program includes required course-related trips
and activities beginning with a three-day tour of Israel,
optional trips to Jordan, including meetings with Jordanian
officials and academics.
Tokyo, Japan: Spring 2005
This program is an inter disciplinary curriculum designed
to provide law students with an understanding of Japanese
and Asian law within a broader societal and cultural context
- all courses are offered in English by US and Japanese law
professors and expert practitioners.
Courses include: Introduction to Japanese Law, East/West
Negotiations, International Contract Drafting, International Trade
Law, International Human Rights, Business Associations, Conflict of
Laws, Immigration Law, National Security Law, Comparative Law, International
Intellectual Property, International Tax and Current Issues in Japanese
Law. Japanese language training is also available.
Academic experience is also enhanced through trips
to the Supreme Court of Japan, the National Diet, Japan Federaltion
of Bar Associations and Fuchu Prison.
