Policy Research Assistant

@China Institute (University of Alberta), Canada’s premier research think tank

(1-year contract with the possibility of extension, hybrid work with select in office days)


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Researches and writes policy briefs and briefing materials 
  • Copyedits and proofreads Institute’s reports, publications and proposals
  • Assists in content development of Institute’s research plans, project proposals and training programs; participates in team research project as appropriate  
  • Collects information and assists with preparation of media interviews 
  • Produces daily news brief on China
  • Researches and prepares slides for presentations, including graphics and notes
  • Prepares graphics and metrics (charts, diagrams, tables, maps) for knowledge dissemination activities including the Institute’s website
  • Verifies transaction information for the China-Canada Investment Tracker
  • Drafts Investment Tracker Quarterly Updates and investment blog pieces
  • Provides research support for the Institute’s Director and Deputy Director
  • Drafts research related letters and correspondences 
  • Supports Institute’s conferences and events as required
  • Other duties as assigned



  • Minimum Bachelor degree in Political Science, Policy Studies, International Relations or Economics, minimum GPA 3.3 
  • Outstanding writing skills
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills
  • Proven editing and proofreading abilities with keen attention to detail
  • Demonstrated quantitative and qualitative research capacity
  • Familiarity with policy research and policy development
  • Knowledge of Asian politics and economy would be an asset but not required
  • High proficiency with MS Office applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work on multiple projects under tight deadlines 
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team
