Updating Cascade to Full Multi-Language Functionality

Over the August long weekend, we will be making changes to Cascade to implement full multi-language functionality to all pages within cascade. The only visible change visitors to the site will notice is the addition of the language code to the url of each page (ie: english pages will have “/en/” added, french pages will have “/fr/” added). All current pages will automatically redirect to the english version if there is no other language and all pages with a second language version will have the language selector available. This change will require a full republish and a content freeze from 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 2 until 8:00 a.m Tuesday, August 6. For more information, please visit the Cascade support site.

What we are changing

We are updating our URL structure to follow the best practices for a site that supports multiple languages.

While visitors may notice changes to the URLs, there will be no impact on the user experience or how they currently use the site.

This change involves:

Change All URLs

All urls will be updated to include /en/ at the beginning.
Example: the univeristy homepage would change to https://www.ualberta.ca/en/index.html

Note that existing french pages will not have their URL paths updated as they already contain the fr language code in their URL.

New Redirect

A new redirect will be added that will redirect any URLs that do not contain a language code (en or fr) to the en version of that page.
Example: A url of https://www.ualberta.ca/admissions/index.html would be redirected to https://www.ualberta.ca/en/admissions/index.html

Updated Language Selector

The language selector has been updated so that it will only appears on pages that have the same content in another language. This work has already been completed.
