Endowed Professorships

Project Overview

Endowed Early Career and Visiting Professorships help UAlberta to attract talented educators and researchers who advance our understanding and make extraordinary discoveries.

Early Career Professorships promote critical early steps towards lifelong scholarship. In non-traditional or novel areas, a professorship supports "proof of concept" breakthroughs that may lead to a foundational research grant, advancing both an area of study and the career of a promising scholar.

Visiting Professorships provide funds to attract people who excel in their respective fields. Visiting professors engage in collaborative research and teach new courses.

Coming Together for a Community Goal

The Scandinavian Studies Program took a huge leap forward when Linnea Lodge decided to make a difference with a major gift to the University of Alberta in 2009.

After the local Scandinavian community raised more than $1.2 million, Lodge contributed a donation that secured the Henry Cabot and Linnea Lodge Professorship in Scandinavian Studies.

As a result of the community's generosity, the University of Alberta is the only institution in Canada to offer three degree programs in Scandinavian studies. The hiring of Natalie Van Deusen in 2012 as the inaugural professor is providing unique opportunities for students in all things Scandinavian.

"I intend to promote this rich field of study through diverse and interesting course offerings, and to make students aware of the many ways in which Scandinavian studies can enrich their academic experience," says Van Deusen. "I also hope to continue the program's long-standing tradition of involvement with the Scandinavian community, and to promote the enduring traditions of our Scandinavian immigrants."

The Impact of Your Donations

More than 17 professorships have been established to support talented faculty who serve as intellectual catalysts across campus.

Endowed donations ensure the University of Alberta will continue to provide opportunities in education, research and outreach far into the future. Endowments provide a steady and permanent source of funding through investments, and the income generated by an endowment provides long-term, continuous support for the endowment's purpose, as directed by the donor.

An endowed Early Career Professorship can be established with a gift of $2 million. This amount contributes to a salary for the researcher or a stipend for other research activity. A Visiting Professorship can be created with a donation of $1.5 million that covers the costs of their stay on campus, including travel, housing and a stipend.

How to Help

You can help advance our goal of building one of the world's great universities for public good by helping us to attract talented educators and researchers. A member of the University of Alberta Advancement Team would be pleased to discuss how creating an endowment chair can support your giving goals.
