Maryna Chernyavska
Archivist
Maryna Chernyavska served as the Researcher in the Kule Folklore Center and the Archivist in the Bohdan Medwidsky Ukrainian Folklore Archives from 2011 until 2022. She has an MA in Ukrainian Folklore and a Master of Library and Information Studies from the University of Alberta.
Maryna worked on various projects in the Archives and the Kule Folklore Centre including research projects, publications, exhibits, digitization initiatives, online accessibility of archival materials and other. Active in the archival community locally and internationally, Maryna served on the Bureau of the University and Research Institution Archives Section of the International Council on Archives (2016-2024), and on the Board of the Working Group on Archives of the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore (2015-2025), as a co-chair for the last 8 years. Maryna's research interests include tradition archives and unorthodox archival practices, digital archives, Ukrainian Canadian cultural heritage, and intangible cultural heritage.
In 2023, Maryna took a position as the Digital Archivist at the University of Alberta Archives where she is responsible for digital records management. She has also been actively participating in initiatives aiming to support archives in Ukraine during the ongoing war: through teaching in an intensive summer archival school for new archival professionals from Ukraine at the Open Society Archives (Budapest), and serving as an expert in the project of the International Council on Archives that supports digitization and preservation of archives in Ukraine during the Russia's war on Ukraine.
