KuFC Director’s Scholarly Article Published in JEF

We proudly invite you to read a newly published article by Oleksandr Pankieiev, Associate Professor and Kule Chair of Ukrainian Ethnography in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, as well as Director of the Peter and Doris Kule Centre for Ukrainian and Canadian Folklore at theUniversity of Alberta.
Titled “Deconstructing Narratives of Belonging and Otherness among Steppe Ukraine Villagers: Place, Space, Language, and Historical Consciousness,” it has just been published in the newest issue of the Journal of Ethnology and Folkloristics (vol. 19, no. 2, p. 25–48).
The primary source for Dr. Pankieiev’s article is oral testimonies recorded by scholars from Zaporizhia National University, the Zaporizhia Novytskyi Scientific Society, and the Zaporizhia Branch of the Hrushevsky Institute of Ukrainian Archaeography and Source Studies under the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
These testimonies were recorded during ethnographic research expeditions to more than 200 villages across the Ukrainian Steppe beginning in the early 2000s. Given that many of the villages encompassed during the original research expeditions have been occupied as a result of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, the interviews collected there have acquired heightened historical significance.
