KUFC & SUCH Celebrate and Preserve UWAC’s Centennial Legacy

In 2026, the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada marks 100 years since its founding in Saskatoon. For an entire century, UWAC has strengthened Ukrainian heritage, language education, and women’s leadership across Canada. Through its Sustainable Ukrainian Canadian Heritage program, the Kule Folklore Centre helps to preserve and share many key elements of UWAC’s legacy of devoted community involvement.

2026 marks a special milestone for the Ukrainian Canadian community — the 100th anniversary of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada (UWAC), founded in 1926 in Saskatoon as a lay auxiliary of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada. For an entire century, UWAC has preserved Ukrainian cultural heritage in Canada, supported Ukrainian language education, and created new opportunities for women’s leadership. One of its lasting achievements is 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯, a bi-monthly journal launched in 1960 and sustained by generations of dedicated editors and contributors.

The Kule Folklore Centre, through the Sustainable Ukrainian Canadian Heritage program, is proud to support this legacy. In collaboration with the KuFC team, the University of Alberta Library’s Digital Initiatives team, and the Internet Archive, Promin is now accessible worldwide—and furthermore, the broader UWAC archival collection has been transferred for preservation to Library and Archives Canada.

In her recent interview with the “Alberta Kontakt” television program, long-time UWAC member Leona Bridges recalls particularly the active role of Ukrainian Canadian women during the Second World War and their humanitarian support afterward for displaced Ukrainians (𝘴𝘬𝘺𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘴𝘪). In the same report she also mentions the talented and prolific Edmonton artist Wadym Dobrolige.
