About our guest:
Carl specialized in linguistic anthropology, but most of his academic carer at the University of Alberta focused on working for Indigenous participation in post-secondary education and research during a time of institutional racism and systemic exclusion. His linguistic research examined speech melody, particularly how conversational prosody signalled inter-brain synchrony. As a professor emeritus, he used a Cree research paradigm to explore how North American gospel music was shared in overlapping Southern, Black, and Indigenous communities of practice. His folks were part of the Dearborn River Métis Community in Montana.

Design created for Carl Urion by the late Johnny Samson (Samson Cree First Nation) in 1978.
There is no charge to attend. Reception to follow (U of A faculty, staff, students and invited guests).
