Emily Berg Earns Prestigious International Nutrition Award
27 April 2026
Award winner Emily Berg
Emily Berg has been awarded the A. Catharine Ross Award in Experimental Nutrition by The Journal of Nutrition — one of the world's leading nutrition science publications.
Berg completed her Master of Science in Physiology in June 2024 under the supervision of Dr. Catherine Chan. Her research explored how non-fat milk supplementation affects the early development of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), a condition in which excess fat builds up in the liver. The findings, published in The Journal of Nutrition, offer new insights into how diet may help prevent or slow the progression of this increasingly common disease.
The A. Catharine Ross Award was established to recognize an outstanding experimental nutrition paper published in The Journal of Nutrition each year. Selected from a pool of over 300 articles published in 2025, Berg's work stood out to the journal's editorial board for its scientific excellence. The award includes a $1,000 honorarium and a commemorative plaque, presented at the annual Nutrition conference.
Berg has since gone on to pursue a PhD in Public Health, continuing her studies at the University of Alberta.
