Legacy archaeological collections present both challenges and opportunities. They are rich in potential but often lack the contextual information central to traditional analysis. This talk outlines a framework for working with such collections that moves beyond conventional curation, drawing on assemblage theory, object itineraries, and entanglement to explore their interpretive possibilities for both the past and present. Based on my experiences with collections in Brazil, I will discuss how different ways of knowing and engaging with collections and evolving collections management practices can generate new meanings and connections for the Bryan/Gruhn Archaeology and Ethnographic Collections.

Dr. Eve Nimmo is an historical archaeologist whose career spans Brazil, Ecuador, Canada, and the UK, working across museums, NGOs, and universities. She joined the Department of Anthropology as Curator of the Bryan/Gruhn Archaeology and Ethnographic Collections in 2024. Her research brings together community-based research, oral histories, and material culture studies to explore cultural heritage and collections management in its many forms. Her research program aims to revitalize the Bryan/Gruhn Collections through collaborative research, ethical and culturally appropriate stewardship, and the creation of sustainable digital infrastructure to enhance engagement and outreach.
