The Department of Surgery continues to shine on the global stage, showcasing excellence in medical education, surgical innovation, and cutting-edge research. In September 2026, clinical faculty and trainees came together at the International Federation of Otorhinolaryngological Societies (IFOS) Congress—the largest international congress for otolaryngology—to share their groundbreaking work with the world.

Leading these efforts was Dr. Nahla Gomaa, Clinical Professor, who served as a speaker, panelist in roundtable discussions, and mentor. Dr. Gomaa delivered two impactful presentations during the congress: "Artificial Intelligence In ORL" and "From The Classroom To The Operating Room: Postgraduate Education For Sustainable ORL-HNS Surgery".

Demonstrating the power of mentorship in shaping future medical leaders, medical student Vinh Nguyen presented his paper titled "Can Brain Imaging Identify Tinnitus Subtypes that Clinical Tests Miss? A Machine Learning Study" during the Young IFOS Session. Vinh conducted this study under the supervision of Dr. Gomaa, who served as the Principal Investigator (PI) on the project.

Dr. Gomaa’s contributions to global medical education extend well beyond the conference floor. Earlier in May 2026, she attended an international conference for education held at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where she conducted an international faculty workshop on Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME). In recognition of her ongoing leadership, she was elected to the editorial board of their official International Journal and appointed as the Vice Chair of the 2027 Annual Conference Organizing Committee.
